Koroleko – Moussa Dembele
Koroleko, meaning “traditional” in the Bambara language (also known as Bamanakan), are a thrilling, original, and contemporary West African music band; that has performed extensively across the UK and Europe, headed by the charismatic and talented multi-instrumentalist Moussa Dembele, a griot from Burkina Faso and Mali. The band is currently made up of six phenomenal musicians from Africa and Europe. Moussa performs on balafon, kora, n’goni, percussion and vocals; and is accompanied by a kick drummer, a djembe player, a saxophonist, and a bass player. The band have been enrapturing audiences for the past three years with their infectious rhythms and energetic performances.
Moussa Dembele comes from a traditional Bwa Bwa Griot storytellers’ family of musicians and craftsmen from Burkina Faso and Mali who have been making and playing musical instruments for generations. His father and various family members trained him from a young age. He has gone on to become a professional musician and teacher as well as a master craftsman of West African instruments all of which he has done for the last 25 years.
Dembele has toured extensively throughout Africa, Europe and Israel as a freelance multi-instrumentalist and bandleader. He spent many years based in Ghana where he played balafon for the renowned Pan-African Orchestra. In addition to the balafon, he plays the kora, ngoni, and percussion, including djembe, doum doum, and talking drum.
Now based in London and leading his band Koroleko, Moussa has performed as a soloist for Greenbelt Festival (2017) Lion’s Den Opening Show – Boomtown (2018) and Shropshire Music Trust. As well, Moussa played with bands including Native Sun and Minyanta. Additionally, from 2019 to 2020 Moussa recorded on tracks with Afriquoi and did a soundtrack with, James William Blades, for the film Black is King by Beyonce.
Moussa continues to build exquisite Kora (African harp), Balafon (African xylophone) Ngoni (African lute), Djembe(drum) and Doum Doum (bass drum) and can also repair all those instruments.
